Surabaya, November 14th-17th, 2013 – Adding other worldwide-scale events, this year the 3rd Federations Internationale des Corps et Associations Consularies (FICAC) East Asia Regional Committee Meeting and Conference (EARC) was also took place in Indonesia, with JW Marriott Hotel Surabaya, as its host. The opening was held on November 14th 2013 and completed on November 17th 2013 with the “Asia to the World”.

FICAC EARC is an East-Asia region of FICAC, the global network of Consular Associations from all around the world to share experience, and co-ordinate efforts to enhance relationship between countries by developing a framework and basis for exchange of current information, ideas and suggestions regarding matters related to the office of Honorary Consuls and Career Consuls. This year the FICAC EARC was conducted with objectives to be the forum of consultancy and networking for consular from several countries, to facilitate activities to support economic development in each country by exhibiting some promotional activities, investment opportunities, and open discussion with other participants, to increase the awareness of recent global circumstances such as AIDS, climate changes, global security and threat, unstable political relationships, and call to action to act together, plus to gather all consular to meet and exchange their views.

The event was attended by representatives from 15 countries in East-Asia. Some high-profile speakers filled the workshop slot and share their knowledge to the audiences. On the first day, the event was opened by Soy M. Pardede, the President/Dean of the Association of Honorary Consults to Indonesia (AHCI), established as an organization with objective to enhance the effectiveness of bilateral relations with Indonesia; Hon. Arnold Foote, OJ, CD, JP, the President of FICAC, H.E. Wardana, Indonesia’s Vice Minister of Foreign Affair, and Soekarwo, Governor of East Java Province.

In his speech, Soekarwo expressed his gratitude as this year’s host stating that “It’s such a good prospect to run the FICAC EARC here in Surabaya because this is a chance to introduce and share the value of East Java to all participants”. He later wished that the success of FICAC will bring mutual benefits by improving the partnership among nations, bilateral or multilateral, especially Asia’s countries.

H.E. Wardana said that FICAC EARC is important to ensure the strong relationship between Indonesia and other countries. His speech was stressed to the wide opportunities in various aspects by being the host of FICAC EARC.

The conferences and business meetings were held in separate rooms with expertise in certain industries became the speakers of ranging topics from trade regulations to business ethics, they are H.E. Dr. Supachai Panichpakdi, the former Secretary General of UNCTAD and Director General of WTO, Tony Fernandes, Group Chief Executive Officer of AirAsia, Hermawan Kartajaya, Honorary Consul of the Czech Republic in Surabaya/ CEO of MarkPlus Inc., and Hon. K.L. Ganju, the Honorary Consul General of Union of the Comoros/ Chairman.

FICAC EARC 2013 was held in Surabaya as part of the local government effort to increase awareness of East Java tourism as well as business investment atmosphere to alternate Jakarta and Bali. This marks the gathering for regional honorably consular and a pre-event for international FICAC 2015 in Bali, the first time it’s hosted in Indonesia.
